Laugavegur is Iceland’s most popular trek, but we at This Is Iceland don’t settle for normal. In this 9 day trek, you will see the best of Laugavegur, as well as trekking through the stunning landscapes of the Fjallabak nature reserve and the little brother of Laugavegur, named Fimmvörðuháls. The tour takes 9 days, with 15-23 km of walking each day. We guarantee that no other tour company in Iceland offers anything like this!

Itinerary for “The Best of Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls”
Day 1
1
Pick-up
Passengers get picked up in their accommodation in Reykjavík.

Landmannalaugar
We will arrive at Landmannalaugar around noon, set up camp and have lunch. In the afternoon we will explore the area around Landmannalaugar on a short hike.

A night at the baths
After dinner we will bathe in the natural hot springs in Landmannalaugar, then spend the night in a tent.
Day 2

Time to hike
From Landmannalaugar, we will hike to Ljótipollur (which means Ugly Puddle, but we disagree with that), then onwards to Dómadalur (Judgment Valley), Lifrarfjöll and finally to Landmannahellir. A dramatic hike featuring lakes, caves and desert landscapes.

Landmannahellir
Have dinner and spend the night in a tent by the Landmannahellir cave.
Day 3

Hike through hot spring fields
From Landmannahellir we will hike over Pokahryggur, towards Vesturdalir, a highly geothermally active area.

Dalakofi
The hike culminates in a cozy mountain hut named Dalakofi, where we have dinner and spend the night.
Day 4

Markarfljót
The hike continues towards Markarfljót, one of the largest rivers in Iceland, that has carved a massive gorge through the Icelandic highlands.

Hungurfit
From Markarfljót, we hike through the Laufahraun lava fields towards the Hungurfit mountain hut, where the staff of This is Iceland are hut wardens. There we will have dinner and stay the night.
Day 5

Tindfjöll
Tindfjöll is one of the most popular destinations for mountaineers in Iceland. A challenging whole-day hike from Hungurfit. After passing over a glacier, we will end in a mountain hut at Tindfjöll where we spend the night.
Day 6

Fljótshlíð
Going down from Tindfjöll we end up in Fljótshlíð, a hill area close to villages on the south shore, famed for its part in the Icelandic Sagas, especially Njál’s Saga.

BBQ at Fell
A BBQ feast awaits us by the mountain hut Fell in Fljótshlíð where we will then spend the night. If you opt for the six-day version of the tour, this is will be your good-bye party, and you will be driven to Reykjavík on the following morning.
Day 7

Drive to Skógar
We will be picked up in the morning to drive to Skógar, where we will see a magnificent waterfall named Skógafoss.

Start hiking Fimmvörðuháls
From Skógar, we hike towards the mountain hut Baldvinsskáli (also wardened by This is Iceland staff). This is the start of the famous trekking route Fimmvörðuháls in the vicinity of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. We’ll spend the night at the hut.
Day 8

Exploring the Volcano
Starting from Balvinsskáli, we’ll hike towards the volcanic site of the 2010 Fimmvörðuháls eruption for some exploring.

Þórsmörk
The hike continues down to Þórsmörk, a lush green oasis in the midst of the wastelands of the Icelandic Highlands. There we will have a BBQ and spend the last night in tents in Slyppugil.
Day 9
1
Exploring Þórsmörk
We’ll spend the morning exploring Þórsmörk before being picked up to head back to Reykjavík.

Sightseeing en route to Reykjavík
While driving towards Reykjavík, we will stop at the pristine river gorge Stakkholtsgjá, and the two waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi.
3
Return to Reykjavík
After an incredible journey, we arrive back in Reykjavík.
